The University of Port Harcourt has been ranked the sixth in Africa and the first in Nigeria by Times Higher Education (THE), a United Kingdom-based authoritative source for information about higher education.
Placed behind four South African universities and one Ugandan university, UniPort made the cut following the number of papers presented over a period of time.
In this chart by world’s most trusted rankings provider, THE, it reveals the first glimpse of future Africa University Rankings.
“The university rankings provider has revealed the top 15 universities in the region, based solely on their scores for research influence – in other words, how much African universities’ research papers are referred to and cited by other academics across the globe,” THE said in a statement.
The research institute noted that: “To be included in this future-gazing table, an institution must have published a minimum of 500 research papers in the five year period assessed with at least 50 papers per year,” it said.
University of Port Harcourt was the only Nigerian university ranked in the top 15. The full table, which contains the top 30 universities in Africa, will be revealed at the inaugural Times Higher Education Africa Universities Summit, which is billed to take place on 30th and 31st July at the University of Johannesburg.
“As the first major public consultation on the future THE Africa University Rankings, academic leaders and opinion formers will discuss plans for a full and comprehensive ranking for the region.
“This new ranking will be based on Times Higher Education’s respected World University Rankings, but shaped following this initial meeting by bespoke metrics designed to meet the region’s specific challenges.
“Times Higher Education is therefore calling for opinion formers from across the region to attend the Summit, founded with University of Johannesburg, to take part in the debate and help shape the future of university rankings in Africa.
“To attend the Summit, delegates should register at: www.theworldsummitseries.com/aus2015
The ‘snapshot’ table, based on just one of THE’s five respected World University Rankings criteria – research influence, gives a good indication of what a full university ranking might look like for Africa and sees two South African institutions – the University of Cape Town and the University of Witwatersrand – take first and second place respectively.

Hello there, am extremely glad about this update! Just saw this and i came here to say it’s well deserved.
There’s no nook where Uniport is not known in Nigeria and Africa as a whole. As a well travelled person, i really am not surprised over this.

The department of Chemical Engineering needs serious restructuring. I have applied for transcript to be sent to administrative office since last year Febuary 2014. till this time of writing nothing has been done. The HOD, Dr Chukuma, is just robbing his boot on the floor doing nothing.
Nice formation
This is good news. Unique indeed!
IT IS INDEED A WELCOME DEVELOPMENT AS UNIPORT IS KNOWN FOR ITS IN-DEPT ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE.KUDOS TO ALL THOSE WHO MADE IT POSSIBLE, FROM THE LECTURERS TO THE STUDENTS, I SAY CONGRATULATIONS!!!
waaoow… Uniport is truly unique. Special thanks to the Lecturers and HOD of maths/stats department. Let’s keep it up
A welcome development
Congratulations Uniport! I am very pleased with this development. Though, not surprising because of the number of quality/top rated and erudite scholars. The University is indeed a first choice destination for the best brains in Africa. Very pleased with the ratings as my little Geoscientific research efforts may have contributed to this. Bravo Unique Uniport.
Useless Uniport (nothing unique) where they students pay bribe to pass exams,an institution with the poorest turnout in Nigeria.A university that produced Mrs Patience Jonathan, a woman that can not spell umbrella & her husband who could not explain how he got his Phd from Uniport. A university that relies on community mediocre, run as village where decision is taken by illiterates Choba,Ozuoba, Rumualogu, Aluu,Elekahia & entire Akpor community & their chiefs.Lets allow world body rate Uniport & not a mushroom body that you have bribed as a common & usual tradition of Uniport. A university where your girls engaged in climbing ships for money all through the year without reading & they will come out with first class only to be calling umbrella omblala.
Uniport was glorious in 70s/80s in the days of Prof. Ola Rotimi, Prof Alagoa,Prof Tamuno,Prof Fuezer, Prof Ojo,Prof Maduka,Prof Salami, Prof Kay Williamson,Prof Oboforibo,Prof Allison,Prof Odihirin,Prof Okiwello,Dr Wilcox etc. Uniport degree is like a tissue paper, that is why WES highlighted it in red ink that ‘We dont accept any certificate from the University of Portharcourt’

Actually University of Portharcourt has always been the best, which I am proud of any time. Imagine a university that has promoted 37 senior academics to the rank of professor, you will know Uniport deserves to be 6th in African, and in the future, I won’t be surprised if they rank first.
